The Rules of Capitalization

 

The first word of every sentence and all 

proper nouns (words that refer to a 

particular person, place, organization, or 

thing) in English are capitalized.

In some instances, capitalization is also 

necessary for the colon after the first word in a quotation.

In English, there are four different 

sentence types: 

• Simple
• Compound
• Complex
• Complex/Compound

 

First, we need to examine clauses. In 

essence, there are two types of clauses:

• Dependent
• Independent.

 

The Independent Clause

 

An independent clause is made up of three parts:

• A subject
• A verb
• A complete thought
